How to Write a Personal Narrative Essay

One can think of a narrative essay as telling a story. Narrative essays give a writer a chance to write about themselves so often time’s narrative essays become personal narrative essays. Since the writer gets the freedom to write about anything from his or her personal life, there is really no proper topic for this kind of essay. A lot of times essays are funny or experiential, and allow the author to express feelings in many different ways. But as all other types of essays, personal narrative essays have to be coherent and clear. Here are some major tips on how to make a narrative essay interesting and exciting to the reader.

First, the essay needs to have a purpose. You should always keep in mind the main reason for writing the essay. Focus on the main points of the story and emphasize main ideas. However, sometimes the reason for writing a story is unclear at first. Bus as writing starts, the purpose should become clear in the end, expressing how you learned a lesson from the situation and clearly stating the morale of the whole essay.

Second, the essay should be, of course, coherent. The three most commonly used methods for recording events are: flashback sequence, reflective mode, or chronological order. Whichever of these three was chosen in the beginning, it should be held throughout the whole essay. One of the effective ways to get started is to start with the word “I”.  That is empowering word. It sort of makes the you tell the story once it’s written on your paper. And then, just let the hand write whatever is on your mind. Don’t worry about the scattered ideas and thought may flood the paper. Once everything is out on the paper, you as the author, can start shaping an essay out of it putting all events in an order that will make sense to the reader. To make the story more interesting one can use dialogues, because nothing expresses feelings and describes a person better than quotes and unique selection of words.

And third tip is editing. Editing is vital to the quality of the narrative essay or any essay in fact. After all thoughts have been put to paper and organized it is recommended to distract yourself with some different activity. Something that will take your mind off the paper. It will give you, sort of a fresh look at what you already wrote. It needs to be polished and rewritten to the point when there is no irrelevant information. And when you do that it will become an interesting read for the audience reflecting how experiences and memories can shape our future.
