5 Tips To Help You Write A Thesis Statement For A Research Paper

Writing a winning research paper means that you will have to make a claim, and then provide plenty of supporting evidence to prove its veracity. The question you should be asking yourself as you formulate your thesis statement is “what am I trying to prove?”

There are a few things that you should be careful not to forget when you compose your research paper thesis statement. Here are five of the most important:

  1. Stay Focused.
  2. It is imperative that you keep your thesis statement clear and concise. One or two sentences are all that are needed to convey your central ideas to your reader. Your thesis statement should deal only with the material and evidence that will be presented in your paper. Do not include any references to anything that is not directly related to the topic of your research.

  3. Avoid Using The First Person
  4. When you are composing a narrative or descriptive essay, it is entirely acceptable to use the first person. This is not the case when you put together a research paper. While your tone need not be cold and clinical, it should not be overly personal, nor emotional. You should write professionally, but keep your reader engaged by moving smoothly from one point to the next.

  5. It Is Not Written In Stone
  6. Your thesis may change as your research progresses. You have an idea of what you expect your research results will be, but you can never be sure. Expect that there will be tweaking to be done before your assignment is ready to be handed in for grading.

  7. Properly Position Your Thesis Statement
  8. A thesis statement is usually placed at the end of your introductory paragraph. If you choose to place it elsewhere in the introduction, it's not a problem. So long as it strengthens and improves the introduction and your paper overall.

  9. Get Feedback And Final Approval From Your Course Supervisor
  10. Even if you are confident that you have a terrific thesis, and just can't wait to get started on your research paper, check in with your instructor. They may have feedback that makes your thesis statement even stronger. If there is any kind of a problem with your idea, it is better that you know ahead of time. Getting off track will waste time and effort, and both of those are usually in short supply!
