Strict rules to follow when writing an English paper
Writing an English paper can be a challenging process especially if you are unsure of what you have to do. With so many different types of academic papers out there it is no wonder students struggle from time to time. But thankfully there are some strict rules you can follow when writing an English paper which can be applied to any type of paper you are writing. These can help you to get a top mark on your paper and to learn while you research and write the essays.
When writing a paper, no matter the type, you can ensure your work makes sense by creating an outline. The outline is what you use to write your actual paper. You should draft the outline once you have completed your note taking. There are two main ways in which you can craft the outline:
- The first is with topic sentences beneath each section.
- The second is with bullet points to support each section.
Either one is fine, of course, and you should play around with both until you find one that works best for you.
Once you have the outline you can use it to guide your writing. You can then double check the first draft by using a reverse outline. The reverse outline is a method used to make sure your paper is well organized. It is quite a simple thing to create too.
In order to use the reverse outline you should read through the essay entirely. Each time a new point is made, you want to make a summary sentence in your margin. If the essay is well organized, the points you write in the margin will form a coherent argument. If you find that certain points are repeated or are out of place, or worst all of, just did not appear at all, it is then up to you to take these points and integrate them into your paper. Use the summary sentences you made in conjunction with the new points that you are going to include and create a new outline which you can follow when you write your second draft. Consolidate any points that appear more than once. Eliminate any repetition. Create new transitions if they are necessary. Do all of this to improve your organization and then make room to work on the style.
